Guidelines on management of co-occurring alcohol and other drug and mental health conditions

22 Dec 2009: The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) has released a new resource for alcohol and other drugs clinicians.

Guidelines on the management of co-occurring alcohol and other drug and mental health conditions in alcohol and other drug treatment settings was written by Katherine L Mills, Mark Deady, Heather Proudfoot, Claudia Sannibale, Maree Teesson, Richard Mattick, Lucy Burns

The Guidelines were developed  in collaboration with clinicians, researchers, consumers and carers from across Australia, with funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. The purpose of the Guidelines is to provide AOD workers with up-to-date, evidence-based information on the management of comorbid mental health conditions in AOD treatment settings. Models for Integrated Dual Diagnosis Alcohol & Drug Withdrawal

10th Dec 2009: The Northern Mallee Dual Diagnosis Service in partnership with Sunraysia Community Health Services has developed models for Integrated Dual Diagnosis Alcohol & Drug Withdrawal for both Enhanced Home Based Withdrawal and  Hospital Based Withdrawal -  downloadable here 


DDx Excerpts from the Australian Fourth National Mental Health Plan

4th Dec 2009: In mid-November 2009, the Australian Health Ministers' Conference launched the "Fourth National Mental Health Plan: an agenda for collaborative government action in mental health 2009-2014".

Looking beyond dual diagnosis: Young people speak out

6th Nov 2009: A recently published  BeyondBlue / Research Matters research report authored by  Sarah Russell and Erica Evans  that investigates young people’s experiences of youth AOD and mental health services in Victoria, Australia is now available.

The report:

  • documents young people’s positive and negative experiences of services
  • explores young people’s views on ways in which services could be improved
  • identifies young people’s strategies for what they do when things start to go wrong
  • explores how young people prevent relapses and stay well
  • makes consumer informed recommendations for improving youth mental health and AOD services.
